I have made the resolution to go volunteer at the local homeless shelter at least a thousand times. I think, I could lead a poetry workshop! or help people write resumes! But I haven’t yet. I’m not a very participatory person, in general.
However, someone I used to work with reached out on facebook looking for people who knew something about publishing. I thought she was looking for an internship, but it turns out she wanted to write a book. She had been in treatment for a range of things and one of her therapies was writing.
She’s a good writer, but needs to learn about craft. I told her to figure out a way to keep writing. I told her I’d read her stuff. I told her I’d answer her questions. I told her to keep writing and not worry about structure yet. I asked her whether she had a few years to write a memoir. I told her thirty useful things that other people told me.
And then I told her that she could do it and that someone would want to read what she wrote. And I thought of Lyra as I did it.
She’s in school, and so doesn’t have time to read books outside of school. But she needs to learn more about the memoir. What essays about writing would you recommend? What memoir-type essays would you recommend?
