Heroin is not appropriate for cookbooks

We all remember the Penguin debacle, right? A cookbook made it through all the stages of the editing process and was published in Australia with encouragement to add “salt and freshly ground black people.”

While I’m still horrified, I am slightly more sympathetic. Yesterday I ran across the following sentence in a lasagna recipe that made it through one round of editing:

“Coat the bottom of the pan with sauce, add a layer of needles, and another layer of sauce.”

Needless to say, the mistake did not survive the second round of editing.
