Are you independent clause?

I just tried to leave a comment on someone’s blog, and wordpress asked me whether I was independent clause. Well, wordpress, that’s an excellent question.

Indy used to be a persona, a voice I’d slip into, a cavalier perspective I did not always feel. However, as someone who knows me once remarked, the voice is remarkably consistent. And I appear to have grown older and meaner over the last three years.

I’ve been writing a lot more about writing than I have about editing. This is, in part, because I’ve been editing more science papers than I used to, and they’re just not as fun to mock.

Are you who you say you are?

  1. Yes. Sometimes more than I should be. I remember once sending a fellow blogger an email begging them to take a comment down. Too much information. As for my own blog, I keep it pretty much buttoned down to Writing, Books, Dogs. My neighbors read it, as do my kids, my husband’s officemates, old school friends, etc… I recently ran into a neighbor I rarely see and she said, “I love your blog! I feel like I know you so well !!!” (that’s enough to make me want to quit)

    • Good point.

I used to see Averil Dean as another part of myself, with the pseudonym standing at the dividing line between my everyday self and the persona on the screen. But that didn’t last very long. Whatever we call ourselves, however we try to keep the writing-self separate from the rest of us, it just doesn’t work that way. The notion of a persona is a farce.

  2. Yup, I’d say so. I write that knowing full well the perceptions we have of ourselves is often not the perceptions that others have of us.

  3. I get that all the time from WordPress. “Are you Downith?” For me, it’s a complicated question. Because I am and I’m not. That’s not how you spell my name and lately I’ve been thinking of going back to the correct spelling. (cause my life doesn’t have enough issues…) But then that leads to incorrect pronunciation. Blah blah blah – first world existential angst.

How can you say that science papers aren’t as much fun to mock? I’m about to do just that. Again.
